about

To our European eyes, the Tuaregs still appear to be tied to a mythical image: proud "blue men", children of the wind and sand, lords of the desert. But today this mythical world no longer exists. The caravans are almost gone and the Sahara is no longer a land without borders. The Kel Tamachek people are now fragmented between Niger, Mali, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania and Burkina Faso; imprisoned by political borders drawn without taking into account the reality of the nomads, thus effectively preventing the free movement of herds and the exchange of goods. The big problem of the Tuareg and with them of most ethnic minorities (American Indians, Kurds, Amazon Indians etc.) is survival. Added to this is the government repression which, especially in Mali and Niger, has been trying for years to forcefully subjugate the Tuareg who are unwilling to give up their independence. Military and death squads killed hundreds of civilians, deported tribal chiefs and poisoned wells. After the Tuareg riots in Mali between 1990 and 1992, peace agreements were signed which provide for some concessions to their claims for independence. In fact, the political instability of the region and the presence of uranium deposits in the Tuareg territory make these agreements difficult and uncertain to apply.

With the making of this record we want to make a contribution to correct information about the Kel Tamachek people. The proceeds from the sale of this CD help to support the "MUSNAT" project, aid for nomadic schools, in the eighth region of Mali.
